Talking Technology and Innovation Breakthroughs with CareerBuilder.com CTO, Eric Presley
Nov 17, 2008
Eric Presley recently spent some time with CNET’s Dan Farber to discuss how innovation breakthroughs are helping users find jobs, both online and through mobile technologies. Dan and Eric also talked about CareerBuilder.com’s place in the rapidly evolving recruitment marketplace. Eric explained that job seekers essentially want a service to be able to read their resume and provide back relevant jobs - and discussed in detail how CareerBuilder.com has the technology to provide that service.

Making Social Networking Part of Your Recruiting Mix
Nov 11, 2008
Most of the marketing conferences I attend these days are heavily focused on social and/or professional networks. These online communities are places where you can do any number of things from share pictures and reminisce about college days to “meet” and interview potential employees. The two big sites out there in this space are Facebook and LinkedIn. Facebook prides itself on being a “social” network and LinkedIn is a “professional” network (don’t call it “social” when talking to their team).
And, at most of these conferences, someone on a panel or on the stage says this, “The lines have blurred between your social life and your work life.” In fact, I just said that on a panel a few weeks ago… Anyhow, it is true. If you are out there, you are out there. And, ultimately you control your destiny – as do those folks you are thinking about hiring.

Latest Tip for Boosting Productivity May Surprise You
Oct 30, 2008
I knew it!! Okay, so today my boss sent me this post from The Standard which argues the case that businesses can use social media as a strategic recruiting tool. (Ah, yes. I agree.) But it goes even further, saying that sites like Facebook, MySpace and Bebo, for instance, are useful in engaging employees as well, and that, in fact, bosses should allow their employees to use social media sites at work.
While I know I’ve argued the point of using these sites to help with recruiting tactics, I was actually a little surprised but also way psyched to hear the case for giving employees the freedom to peruse these sites during business hours. But according to the Demos research the article mentions, using these sites can actually boost productivity and communication among employees.

YouTube, You Score: Why Social Media Users Make Great Candidates
Oct 20, 2008
Last month, I talked about how more and more businesses are utilizing social media as a screening tool for candidates. Today, I came across a great post on AdWeek that puts a whole other perspective on the use of social media for hiring that I wanted to share. Benjamin Palmer discusses how, as technology changes (and as the popularity of social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and countless free blogging sites grows) hiring managers should change their tactics to find talent who not only care about these things, but can keep up with these trends.
Although Palmer’s post addresses ad agencies in particular, it seems to me that this advice holds true in nearly every industry today. ”Now the only way to keep up is if your organization is comprised of people who keep up with all things online all the time — and because they want to. Because it’s their habit,” he says. If companies want to stay relevant in reaching consumers, they have to advertise where those consumers spend time.

One in Five Employers Setting Online Profile Status to “…is Screening”
Sep 11, 2008
Peeking at candidates’ Facebook profiles, are we? Hey, there’s no shame in that game anymore…well, there’s less shame than there used to be, at least, according to CareerBuilder.com’s latest survey.
Yesterday, CareerBuilder.com released a survey saying more employers are using social networking sites to screen candidates than two years ago. Twenty-two percent of hiring managers reported they used social networking sites to research candidates, up from 11 percent in 2006. Of those who have screened job candidates this way, 34 percent found content that caused them to dismiss the candidate from consideration: Read the rest

No Money, Sex, Religion…but what about Politics?

How much election coverage should your co-workers really be covering?
It’s safe to say that the hype of the upcoming U.S. presidential election isn’t going to die down anytime soon. The dust barely had time to settle from Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at last week’s Democratic National Convention before the drama surrounding Sarah Palin, John McCain’s newly announced vice presidential candidate, caught on media fire.
Update: Sarah Palin to give what some are dubbing the “speech of her life” tonight at 10:30 EDT…
