Making Social Networking Part of Your Recruiting Mix
Nov 11, 2008
Most of the marketing conferences I attend these days are heavily focused on social and/or professional networks. These online communities are places where you can do any number of things from share pictures and reminisce about college days to “meet” and interview potential employees. The two big sites out there in this space are Facebook and LinkedIn. Facebook prides itself on being a “social” network and LinkedIn is a “professional” network (don’t call it “social” when talking to their team).
And, at most of these conferences, someone on a panel or on the stage says this, “The lines have blurred between your social life and your work life.” In fact, I just said that on a panel a few weeks ago… Anyhow, it is true. If you are out there, you are out there. And, ultimately you control your destiny – as do those folks you are thinking about hiring.

Difficult Times Ahead Bring Opportunities to Embrace Change
Oct 28, 2008
I had an interesting conversation today with a VP of Global Recruiting for an international financial services firm, which inevitably turned to the current state of the American economy. To paraphrase his comments he said, “…yes, the economy is bad, but I still have commitments I need to deliver on for next year. I can’t have open sales positions. I have to complete our PeopleClick implementation. I have to make sure that my offices overseas are staffed. I have to advertise our company and the employment brand.” While acknowledging that the economy isn’t good, he also acknowledged that his business still needs to run – the world still turns.
This is an important lesson. We need to continue pushing forward. The environment will be more difficult, but it is in these difficult times that we will focus on the actions that really matter. And through those actions we will create success.

How about Generation “Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?”
Sep 17, 2008
Thanks to all who commented on my earlier post about supervising Generation Y - it generated some insightful conversation about the generation gap, so I thought it worthwhile to continue…
I have to admit that before now, I hadn’t thought much about how my own generation is perceived in the workplace. While I wasn’t so much surprised to learn that you believe we’re innovative and tech-savvy (that’s pretty much how we perceive ourselves, an attitude that might explain why we’re also seen as narcissistic…), I was a little taken aback to read words like “lazy” and “disrespectful” in reference to us.

The People’s Voice: We’re Listening To You
Sep 15, 2008
What makes this nation unique is the opportunity for an uncensored voice of the people, for opinions to be shared, for questions to be asked. It is what makes an election year always interesting, and inspires a posting such as this to reach out for public opinion (don’t jump ahead just yet, but make sure you exercise your 1st Amendment rights in the comments feature below).
In that political vein, with the earth-shattering intriguing political convention season behind us, and candidates racing towards what’s guaranteed to be a highly-dramatic November 4th Election Day, several things are certain: Read the rest

Personality Testing Can Cut Your Turnover in Half?
Sep 2, 2008
Our skills are put to the test every day at work, whether by seeing a difficult project through to completion, having a tough conversation with a subordinate or peer, executing a successful interview, or taking on a worthy yet inexperienced opponent in the company’s cutthroat chili contest.
However, the thought of taking actual “tests” makes many of us shudder, bringing back painful school days flashbacks. Add to that the fact that many companies are thoroughly vetting candidates a la Sarah Palin (or not?) pre-hire, and the stakes are suddenly a bit higher for all involved.

Putting the “Super” Back in Supervise
Aug 29, 2008
If you’re a manager - and stop me if you’ve heard this one before - it really helps your employees to not be a jerk. The Onion recently released this “study” that, as is typical of the satire newsmagazine, made me laugh: “Not Being an A**hole May Boost Employee Morale.” Ah, it’s funny because it’s true.
As a refugee former employee at a company that made the dysfunctional atmosphere of Wernham Hogg look like Google, I can relate (more than I’d prefer to) with David Silverman’s recent post in the Harvard Business Review about the “11 Habits of the Worst Boss I Ever Had.”
